Overview

Early in my career, I had the opportunity to observe daily operations at a few Boys & Girls Clubs in Boston. This on-site experience highlighted several operational inefficiencies, particularly around data collection and decision-making processes. This experience ultimately informed the development of a critical proposal that met the club's requests.

The Challenge

The Boys & Girls Club needed a solution to streamline check-in processes, track attendance, and manage data more effectively, while using that data to gain insights for program expansion, funding reporting, resource management and much more. With limited technology in place and an overwhelmed staff, they required a tool that could simplify these tasks and improve overall operational efficiency.

Approach

After gathering insights on-site, I was tasked with concepting a prototype for a mobile app that could address their pain points. In just two weeks, I designed user flows and mid-fidelity prototypes to support the following use cases:

  • Taking attendance at the front door and within various programs (both online and offline).
  • Registering new members.
  • Tracking individual progress in skill-building activities.
  • Creating, sharing, and storing forms.
  • Communicating with caregivers and pushing alerts.
  • Handling unexpected scenarios, such as missing membership cards or expired volunteer certifications.

Execution

The rapid iterations involved designing mobile screens that showcased specific user flows requested by Boys & Girls Club, such as managing large group check-ins and tracking meal distribution. I provided annotations alongside the prototype to ensure the presenters could easily walk through each scenario during the demo.

“Home Run Demo. The team did a phenomenal job, especially given the short notice, like a flawless symphony with little time for rehearsal.”
– VP of Strategy, Partner Vendor

Result

The prototype was a critical component of our proposal demo. Feedback from our partner was overwhelmingly positive, describing the demo as a "home run" and praising our ability to deliver a polished solution under tight deadlines.

This experience solidified my passion for UX by allowing me to create meaningful solutions from the ground up and deliver results in high-pressure situations.
